
Built as a townhouse in the 1860’s, Kemp Townhouse is a grade 2 listed building and has retained many of its beautiful architectural features. However, as a consequence, the structure of the building presents some physical barriers to accessibility.
We are able to accommodate guests with limited mobility; however not all facilities are accessible to guests who are confined to a wheelchair.

Kemp Townhouse is located in a residential street just off the seafront, ½ a mile from Brighton city centre and can be reached by many transport options such as bus, train and car.

Brighton train station is located at the north end of Queens Road, this is approximately a 20 minute walk from us, Taxis are available from the outside of Brighton train station and will take approximately 5-10 minutes to arrive at Kemp Townhouse and cost around £7.
Brighton & Hove buses stop at the station, the numbers 12, 14 and 27 pass by the bottom of Atlingworth Street where we are located, you will need to get off at the New Steine bus stop and walk approximately 3 minutes along Marine parade until Atlingworth Street is reached.
Pool Valley bus station is located just off the Old Steine near to the Brighton Pier, and is approximately an 8 minute walk away from Kemp Townhouse.
The city Centre of Brighton is approximately a 10 minute walk away from Kemp Townhouse.
E-mails, letters, breakfast menus and registration cards can be produced in large print by prior request.
There are no car parking facilities at the hotel, however Kemp Townhouse can provide you with a ‘Residents Only’ parking voucher for £8 and will be valid for 24hours. These vouchers allow you to park in the Resident only bays in the roads surrounding Kemp Townhouse. A space is not guaranteed. For Blue Badge holders, there is one disabled parking bay on Atlingworth Street, approximately 50 yards from the entrance.Other parking options include ‘Pay and Display’ spaces on roads surrounding Kemp Townhouse and NCP car parks that are located in the centre of Brighton approximately 10 minutes walk from Kemp Townhouse.
Assistance is provided wherever possible with parking and luggage.
There are 2 tiled steps up to the front door of the property and one further step (threshold) into the building.
A mobile wheelchair ramp is available for these steps. This is the guesthouse's only entrance.
If you require assistance into the hotel please contact us prior to arrival to discuss your requirements. A seat is located in the entrance hall of Kemp Townhouse if required.
Loop systems are not available, and extra keys are available upon request.
All doors located throughout the property are manual and are operated with an electronic key card.
There is no lift. Assistance with luggage is available.
A small reception area is located in the entrance hallway of Kemp Townhouse, just in front of the original staircase.
Check-in formalities are completed in the guest rooms .
Hotel staff are available from 7.30am – 10.00pm every day.
Housekeeping service is available from 7.30am – 4.00pm every day.
A Night Porter is on site throughout the night if any assistance is required.
Check-in is until 10.00pm unless otherwise pre arranged.
The Fire Evacuation procedure will be explained if requested, otherwise ‘Incase of Fire’ information can be found in the directory located in each bedroom.
From the reception area in the entrance hallway the Guest Lounge/ Breakfast Room can be reached via the main staircase to the first floor, 20 steps.
Toilets are all en-suite. There are no public toilets at the property.
The Guest House is well lit with both artificial and natural light.
There are 9 bedrooms at Kemp Townhouse, 1 Single, 3 Standard Doubles, 2 King size, 2 Super King (1 can be made into a Twin room with 2 Single beds) and 1 Emperor size room.
There is no lift access to any of the rooms.

There are 3 bedrooms located on the ground floor, at the front 001 has a partial sea view with either a 6ft super king size bed or it can be separated into 2 3ft single beds. 002 is at the back of the hotel and has a 4ft 6in Double bed, 003 also at the back of the hotel has 3ft single bed, access to this single is down one step to the room.
The First floor has room 102 our second 4ft 6in Double room at the back. The first floor is accessed via the main staircase approximately 20 steps.
Between the First and the Second floor is room 203 that is at the back of the building and has a 4ft 6in Double bed. This room is very small and is accessed via the main staircase, 31 steps.
The second floor has room 201 which has a 6ft 3in Emperor Size bed with partial sea views and 202 at the back of the building which has a 5ft King Size bed. This floor is accessed via the main staircase, 40 steps.
The third floor has room 301, which has a 5ft 7in Super King Size bed with a free-standing bath in the bedroom, the bath is 2ft high on a 1 step raised platform the room also has partial sea views. Room 302 has a 5ft King Size bed and both 301 and 301 can be accessed via the main staircase, 58 steps.
The rooms are all carpeted.
Duvets and pillows as standard are a hypoallergenic treated mixture of goose and duck down, though non-feather is available upon request.
All rooms are equipped with a remote controlled flat screen colour television with digital channels (all in English - please note teletext cannot be accessed) and a clock radio with alarm.
Rooms do not have air conditioning or telephones.
All rooms are equipped with a fire detection and alarm sounders.
All rooms have complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and water.
The wet rooms are all tiled with non-slip tiles and are barrier-free (i.e. there is no shower tray to step into.) Each room also has a shower mat for extra grip.
Grab rails are fitted in each bathroom.
All rooms have complimentary toiletries; room 301 also has a free standing bath. Shower, bath and sink taps are either pull knobs or lever taps. All toilets have a push button duel flush system.
Visitors Information Centre in Brighton provides as much assistance as possible for visitors with disabilities. The centre is fully accessible to the disabled. For those with hearing difficulties, communication via Mincom is possible on 01273 292595. (Please note you will not get through to this number with a normal phone). The Visitor Information Centre also has a wide range of information sheets, which can be made available in large type, Braille or on audio tape/CD. Please contact us should you need any information in an alternative format.

For people who have not visited Brighton before, it may be helpful to know that Brighton is situated on a hill that runs from north to south and from west to east across the city centre. This means that some of the routes within the centre are quite steep, with gradients of up to 1:6 (including Trafalgar Street which runs east to west from the train station).
Wheelchair users arriving by train are therefore advised to use Queens Road as the main road to the city centre, and then either Western Road to the main shops, West Street to the sea, or North Street to the shopping areas of the North Laine and the Lanes, and the Royal Pavilion.
Some of the streets in the historic parts of the city can be rather narrow, which means that they can become quite congested. Please contact the Visitor Information Centre staff for information on forthcoming major events, which might help you to plan your trip.
Car
There are parking bays for Blue Badge holders in most areas in the city centre.
Blue Badge holders can park strong>for free in Pay & Display Bays, and Dual Resident/Pay & Display bays in Brighton & Hove however not ‘resident only’ bays and city centre Car Parks. Although parking on double yellow lines should normally be avoided, Blue Badge holders with a clock are allowed to park on single or double yellow lines for up to 3 hours, provided they are not causing any obstruction (this excludes the Kings Road area where no parking is allowed). The blue badge must be displayed with the expiry date and serial number visible and a time clock showing the time of arrival.
Parking for disabled visitors/ blue badge holders
There are parking bays specifically for blue badge holders in most areas in the city centre and these will be marked. Otherwise, parking for blue badge holders is allowed in any pay & display bay, free of charge for an unlimited period. However, please note that parking is not permitted in resident permit bays without a resident permit. Blue badges should always be clearly displayed.
Although parking on double yellow lines should normally be avoided (please check street signs for guidance), parking on these and single yellow lines is allowed for up to 3 hours with the clock clearly displayed as long as they are not causing an obstruction or there are no loading restrictions.
Please note that parking on double yellow lines on Kings Road is not permitted.

5 bays are located on New Road outside Pinnochio’s restaurant and some are also located near the entrance to the Pavilion theatre. 4 bays are located on Church Street by the North Gate entrance to the Royal Pavilion gardens.

Train - Southern Railway's new trains have ramps for wheelchair access, designated accessible spaces in some cars, and an accessible WC, as well as colour schemes and visual & audible announcements that are helpful to people with a sensory disability. Southern Railway also offers advice on the accessibility of stations and help on and off trains - people who require assistance need to book this at least 24 hours in advance. They can also arrange for accessible taxis to be made available at no cost on Southern routes to take passengers with disabilities from and to stations, which are not accessible to, and from stations that are. Toilets
City toilets and accessible toilets are marked on our city map which you can obtain from our Visitor Information Centre.
Most of Brighton & Hove's accessible public toilets can only be opened with a RADAR key. All of these are now securely locked at night.
The key can be used for any of the accessible public toilets in Brighton, Hove or any other town, which is in the same scheme.
RADAR keys are available to Brighton & Hove residents who are registered disabled free of charge on completion of a form (a charge is made for replacement keys).
Visitors to the city can obtain a key for £6 from City Direct, Bartholomew Square, Brighton or from the Visitor Information Centre, however your registration number, blue badge certificate or a letter from your GP is essential before we can issue a key.
